Reading

PokPok reads sometimes. Not as much as he would have like to, due to work, studies and various other entertainment distractions. There are a few good reads in the list, Pokpok recommends you to read them too as he found them enjoyable. Oh and Pokpok buys them, mostly in hardcover as he likes the touch of the solid front and back.

The Reading List, in no particular order, headed by the author are:

John Grisham
Meimei bought me 'The Confession' for Christmas 2010 and I've not read it to-date. I also bought 'The Litigators' just so I can have it in hardcopy and am saving it for later when I have time to read. I've not purchased any of John's books since then as I've been busy over the last few years. I suppose I'll pick them up again someday. John's novels have always been excitingly fun to read.
  • Time to Kill
  • The Firm
  • The Pelican Brief
  • The Client
  • The Chamber
  • The Rainmaker - This has been one of my favourites, so much that I went to catch the movie at the theatre. I think it's the rush of triumph of the underdog that made it such a satisfying read. Who doesn't like a perfect ending?
  • The Runaway Jury
  • The Partner
  • The Street Lawyer
  • The Testament
  • The Brethren
  • A Painted House
  • The Summons
  • The King of Torts
  • The Last Juror
  • The Broker
  • The Innocent Man
  • The Appeal
  • The Associate
  • Ford County
  • The Racketeer
  • Gray Mountain
  • Rogue Lawyer

Mark Haddon
Never heard of Mark till I saw his book on the entrance display at Borders. The Whitbread award was clearly shown on the book cover, so I thought why not? It must have a certain standard to win a book prize.
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - It's a thin easy read, but so much depth narrated through the eyes of a disabled child. I highly recommend everyone to read this.

Lisa Lutz

A surprising find, recommendation from Meimei. She likes the protagonist's quirky and whimsical habits. We stopped buying the series over the last few years as we were busy. I'm sure to pick this up again once time permits.

    • The Spellman Files
    • Curse of the Spellmans
    • Revenge of the Spellmans
    • The Spellmans Strike Again

    J R R Tolkien
It's funny how I've only ever read this book. The Hobbit never appealed to me, though this might change with the Hobbit movie series. As for the posthumous publications, I'm giving them a pass.
    • The Lord of the Rings - I took this up one fateful night at about 8pm and didn't stop till I was done at close to 5am.

    Natsuo Kirino
I never thought I would read a book that was translated from another language. But this works and makes me wonder if her other books are just as good.

    • Grotesque

    Mitch Albom
His novels tends to present elements of religion. I'm not overly bothered by it although it is not the religion I practice but it does get a little tiring after awhile.

    • Tuesdays with Morrie
    • The Five People You Meet in Heaven
    • Have a Little Faith
    • For One More Day

    Jason Hahn
I bought this due to Jason's column First Person in the 8days magazine.
    • Table for Three - More of the feel of the weekly columns, complied into a book. Nothing deviating from the column make me give it a bigger thumbs up.

    John Grogan
I read this before it was made into a movie. I did shed a tear or two at the end of the book.
    • Marley & Me - Touching tribute to men's best friend.

    Jon Katz
This was kinda a filler for the dog companion story after reading Marley & Me.
    • A Good Dog - With so many author penning books talking about their relationship with their dog, it seems to get tiring after sometime. But this book holds it own and does justice to the genre.

    Conor O'Clery
I used to work for the company whose founder is the protagonist in the book. You should pass on this unless you too am working or have worked there since you can better appreciate the history of the company.
    • The Billionaire Who Wasn't - Interesting how it all started. Good detail on the history though the sections after the LVMH purchase were a little rushed. Again, it really is a specific read on a certain topic and you can only appreciate it if you have been somehow involved.
