My Wallaby Experience

Going back for reservist and hearing that next is Wallaby has brought back memories of my trip to the Australian outback 9 years ago. I was there 3 weeks and although I don't remember a lot of it, somethings are still vivid in my mind just because it was a horribly tough trip. It's always the toughest assignments that you remember best.

The Outfield Camp that was our Base Camp

There was a major Apache exercise the same time we were here for Wallaby. All the bunks in the Camps were taken up by the regulars. So they threw us to an outfield camp and we didn't see concrete walls for the whole 3 weeks we were there. There was no difference between being back at camp or going out on missions ... we were out in the wilderness. It was the most horrible condition they could leave us in ...

The Slitting Blade

I was shaving. And when I was done, somehow common sense left me for a moment. I ran my fingers against the shaving blade to clean off the tiny hairs. And the next thing I felt was utter pain and a steady stream of blood flowing down onto the sandy ground.

The image and pain still haunts me. I can feel it cut through my very veins whenever I think about it. To do this in such a harsh environment adds on to the anguish and despair I felt as I rushed to find bandage for my self-inflicted wounds.

Tearing Down a Triple Con in the Dead of Night

There was only eight of us in the RP section. One fella managed to get himself excused from going out on missions. Of the seven that went out, one decided that his life was far more important than anyone else and basically snaked through everything.

One of the key images I had was the team trying to tear down the triple con we had setup a couple of hours ago at 1am. The commanders decided on a dawn raid so we were packing up at 5am. Till this day, I'm still very proud that we managed to put up and tear down a full perimeter triple con with such efficiency and only six man. The snake sat it out because he thought it was too dangerous to be handling wires while maintaining light discipline.

The Doggy Poo

They added something to the combat rations that made our poop look like that of animals. Think of solid dog poo and you get the picture. The idea behind the doggy poo is that it was suppose to mask your presence. The enemy would mistaken a soldier's poo for an animal's.

I think the concept is good but sadly the execution missed a far more important practical aspect. No matter how much our poo is made to look like animal's, there is a one single dead giveaway that makes the whole scheme fail miserably.

They forget that unlike animals, we humans will use toilet paper to clean our butt after we have done our business. So the very sight of toilet paper will tell the enemy that 'hey though this poo looks like a dog's, it's actually from a person!"...

The Potty Episode

Baby's been having watery poop for the past 4 weeks. It got everyone really worried. We were at the paediatrician twice already but nothing the doc gave helped. She just kept pooping 6-8 times a day. She is visibly thinning and we were constantly feeding her water to keep her hydrated.

Since english medicine didn't work, we had been going to a famous children TCM at Kembangan for massage therapy the last 2 weeks. It was a pleasant experience even though baby was pretty vocal the first couple of times when therapist worked on her. Meimei and Mama had to constantly keep her entertained with toys.

I'm not sure the TCM massage worked any wonders but am glad we gave it a try. Baby seems calmer after each session and I think she welcomes the time out of the house.

I wonder if this is another one of those growth spurs episodes. She does look a little meatier on the thigh ... but that could have been a trick on our eyes since she did thin during the first 2 weeks. Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't happen too often. It's not possible for children not to fall sick, its nature's way of growing stronger. But it has taken quite a toll on everyone. So let's keep such episodes to a minimum if we can help it.

Remembering Tummy Food

We were at Akashi today. Meimei had this almost everyday during her pregnancy. I highly encouraged her since the restaurant was just at the basement of her office block and she didn't have to crowd with others during lunch time. I think it's a favourite of baby's too ... Hehe

"Mummy, is this the restaurant we always eat
when I was in your tummy?"
"The beef one right?"
"I love it!"
"So can I have some too later?"
"Babies cannot eat? Then what are we doing here?
Pulang yuk ... go home go home!"

The Mushroom Head Incident

It just happened... Emily was constantly scratching her ears and Meimei thought her sideburns were irritating her. So she asked the maid to snip off some of the hair. Meimei held the sideburns up expecting the maid to trim off the ends. But somehow I think the message got lost in translation and the maid went for the end closer to Emily's head... With one quick cut, all of her sideburns on the right of her head were gone!

Meimei had an hysterical laugh after her sideburns were snipped ... it was both bits of uncontrolled chuckle at the silly hairdo and tears on the lost of her lovely sideburns. Oh, and add in a tiny bit of anger for the maid because she made this 'mess'.

So anyhow we had to snip the left sideburns too so her hair doesn't look lopsided. Hope it grows back soon or we can only reminisce through photos ...

High Chair Trial Run

We are starting to feed her more meals of solids and so a high chair seems appropriate. Friends recommended getting one from Ikea which is good and economical. We are hoping to have her sit by the table while we have lunch and feed her staple of rice cereal.

好呀!午餐了!
我乖乖坐了,几时上菜啊?

Meimei had sent us a sequence of baby's infatuation with her hand towel through whatsapp. It's definitely worthy a post all on its own ... Hehehe

Messy Eater

Our baby had her first semi-solids today. Its too bad I wasn't there to witness it first hand. Meimei sent pictures and I had a good laugh at her silly face.

Even though she kept pushing out the cereal with her tongue, she eventually finished the whole bowl. With this we start our next journey of discovery ... what can she not take?

I'm hoping she doesn't have any allergies. She better not be like daddy ... who spend a third of a lifetime abstaining from shellfishes.

Living With Thy Nemesis

A year ago Meimei bought a device of immense irritation. I swore my contempt and retaliation against its unnerving skin wrenching sound.

Yet today I find myself bearing its noise because it helps to distract baby during feeding time. I even mastered enough restraint to wield it while dancing a tune as baby's meal time jester.

Haha its truly amazing what parenthood can make you do.

Flipper~ly-Flop

Emily made her first full flip today, complete with pulling her left arm out from under her belly.

She doesn't stay long in the position though before screaming for help. Her neck is also still weak and cannot hold a raised head for more than few seconds at a time. She'll constantly bump her cheeks against the mattress. Hope they are still chubby after all this bouncing haha.
